The Egress Studio Story
About Egress Studio
The Egress Studio building was built in 2005, a couple years after Jim Bertolino took up residence at the Noon Road house. He was planning to make art again, but has found writing poetry is still more intriguing than making art, though he has a fabulous collection of art created by Washington, Ohio, New York and Wisconsin artists. So the studio became a haven for me to work on all sorts of projects, from graphic design to paper-making, to assemblages and a wide variety of other projects. Jim's office is up at the house, so this space is pretty much mine. We also have a small building we call the Poetry Shed, where we house thousands of poetry books, from larger anthologies to the smallest of chapbooks.
I came up with the name "Egress Studio" back in the '90's when my old studio was in a leaky, half-insulated building here on Noon Road. We've upgraded that old building now, so it is called the Frame Shop. Not sure exactly why I chose Egress for the studio's name, but the idea of an exit from one space to another still works for me. As the name for the design/art studio, I use it as a metaphor for ideas, since they continue to exit from one place as they move to another.
Carnival of the Animals, computer colorized line drawing
Sometimes, a client will ask me for a line drawing, like this one for The Carnival of the Animals, which was the feature of a Whatcom Symphony Orchestra Family Concert. I also animated this image for their website, too.
Egress Studio, The Interior
Inside Egress Studio there are books, tools, comfortable places to sit,
tables to work on, space, light, and art.
Our Location is on Noon Road
outside Bellingham, Washington
Visits to Egress Studio are by appointment only. You're welcome to call 360-398-7870 or email to request an appointment to visit Egress Studio, or discuss your next project. I will be happy to set up a time for a visit. Please do not stop by unannounced, as I am always working on something, and would rather not experience an interruption unless it was planned.
